Early signs of distress:

1.

Sadness and tearfulness

2.

Signs of agitation, anger, aggression, nervousness, or fear

3.

Change in behaviours in schoolat work

4.

Change in lifestyles and appearance

5.

Use of alcohol, cigarettes, medication to cope

Critical signs of distress:

1.

Disclosures of suicidal thoughts

2.

Self-harm or non-accidental injuries

3.

Indications of doing harm to self or others

4.

Expression of hopelessness

5.

Distorted sense of reality, incoherent or illogical speech

What you can do:

1.

Find a comfortable place and raise your concerns

2.

Listen actively

3.

Ask how you may be able to help

4.

Help to brainstorm possible solutions, including referrals to relevant services and help sources
