The Workplace Fairness Act (WFA) protects employees from discrimination based on age, nationality, gender/family status, race/religion/language, and disability.
Job advertisements that include selection criteria unrelated to the role, or that contain exclusionary language, may be reported to TAFEP. Those who have experienced unfair treatment at any stage of the hiring process, including shortlisting, interviews, or final selection, are similarly encouraged to lodge a report.
If employees face discrimination at the workplace, they should first raise the issue through their organisation's internal grievance channels, which are usually outlined in the employee handbook. Depending on the situation, this could mean speaking to a supervisor, a trusted manager, or HR- and for complex cases, escalating to top management.
If the organisation is unionised or the employee is an NTUC member, the union can help raise the grievance formally. Employees can also reach out to the NTUC Workplace Advisory or the U PME Centre for tailored advice and support.
Where internal resolution is not possible or no grievance channel exists, employees may contact TAFEP directly for advice. TAFEP will evaluate the report and, where discriminatory practices are substantiated, escalate the matter to MOM. Enforcement actions, including the suspension of work pass privileges, may follow.
Employees who experience distress as a result of discrimination are encouraged to seek professional support through the following services:
- SOS Singapore: 1767 (Call), 9151 1767 (Whatsapp)
- national mindline 1771: 1771 (Call), 6669 1771 (Whatsapp)
